‘Into the Night’ watercolour after the style of Edward Hopper.
This is a challenge from lovely friends who are drawn to the paintings of Edward Hopper, asking me could I do the same/similar. Not an easy task as, at present, I am still making space to use my large upright easel, so I am not able to make use of my oils and be able to stand back from the work as it is in progress. Nevertheless, always up for a challenge I have learnt a lot from using watercolour layering technique to try to assimilate a similar look to the painting of American, E. Hopper’s ‘Nighthawks’ 1942 which is housed in the Art Institute of Chicago.
I painted this on stretched Bockingford 200lb cp paper ¼ Imperial size. (11” x 15” approximately) using a limited palette of my favourite DS paints with one W&N pigment, Cobalt Turquoise.
It really is so meaningful and informative to paint from Master Painters Old and New, remembering to whom we give credit for being able to do so. Please note, some modern-day masters do NOT allow the use of their paintings for interpretation without the necessary permission and then sometimes only for charity or one’s own private enjoyment, always credited back to the original source.
